National Rescue Award
National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches
This award qualifies those swimming teachers and coaches in order to supervise ‘programmed’ activities. This is the minimum qualification to be able to supervise swimmers whilst under their direct teaching / coaching.
This qualification compliments our programme of ASA Teaching Aquatics and Coaching Aquatics qualifications and is highly recommended for anyone involved in teaching or coaching swimmers. The course will cover the following:
- Class Management and Pool Safety
- First Aid
- Swimming Pool Rescue Techniques
Ideally candidates will also hold at least a Level 1 Award in Teaching Aquatics or Coaching qualification or Module 1 or 2 for School Teachers.
The duration of this course is dependent on the learner’s previous experience and qualifications.
12 hours or 2 days for new candidates with no previous experience
6 hours or 1 day for candidates with previous experience
4 hours for candidates renewing the qualification
The format and duration of the course is flexible and can be arranged to accommodate specific group requirements
Learner entry requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification and learners are not required to have any prior experience of coaching. Learners must be at least 15 years of age to register onto this qualification, however to be awarded the qualification, learners must have turned 16 years of age either before or on the final day of the course.
The qualification is assessed through a variety of methods and activities in the form of observation, written evidence and/or verbal discussion. Your tutor will help you to understand the different sorts of evidence that are acceptable and appropriate and the methods of assessment that will be used.
Practical assessments will be conducted through observation in your own environment.

A National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches is valid for 24 months and will be issued to the candidate on successful completion of all the assessment criteria.
