ASA Certificate for Teaching School Swimming
ASA Certificate for Teaching School Swimming (Key Stages 1 and 2)
The Certificate for Teaching School Swimming (Key Stages 1 and 2) is part of the ASA National Curriculum Training Programme and is recognised by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education in the UK.
The exact detail of what is covered in the theory/practical sessions and how best to deliver the learning programme will be decided through consultation between the Course Tutor and the Course Organiser. Flexibility is allowed in order to ensure that the programme best suits the prior knowledge and experience of those attending.
Structure and Delivery:
In order to achieve the full certificate, candidates must complete modules 1 and 2 (units 1 – 5). Candidates who complete module 1 only (units 1 and 2) will receive an attendance certificate.
The training programme may be delivered as discrete but connected modules, or as one integrated programme. The programme is structured in units to allow for flexibility in respect of delivery models e.g. twilight, full day etc.
The qualification is delivered using a combination of theory and practical throughout both modules. Module 1 (i.e., units 1 and 2) must be completed prior to progressing onto Module 2 (units 3 – 5). Units 3 – 5 can be completed in any order. Candidates taking module 2 are required to complete all three units within a two-year period.
Who can attend?
The Certificate for Teaching School Swimming (Key Stages 1 and 2) is open to any person working within a primary school swimming programme e.g. school teacher, classroom assistant, learning support staff, nursery nurse, qualified swimming teachers, parent, other helpers, etc. In addition, students involved in initial teacher training may also attend.
